States Rights
In the 1700’s the Americas separated from the largest colony of Europe. After slavery was banned Virginia was still strongly against the idea of it. With over-population, this caused the people to move Westward. A violent slave revolt in 1831 was caused by people wanting their slaves back. Many people found slaves effective and found them “good.” Overtime the North and the South began to have many disagreements and very different needs. There became an equal number of slaves in the South compared to the number of non-slave holding states in the North.
In 1850 the weak federal government in the South raised the issue of secession. Northerners in free states were forced to their feelings about slavery even when some were not in agreement towards being in a free state. Since Abe Lincoln won the 1860 election and he was against slavery, this gave the idea to the Northerners they were now not able to have the right to self-govern, abolish slavery, and crush the way the Southern runs their economy.
