Underground railroad- The Underground Railroad was not underground or a railroad the name can pretty deceiving. The reason it was called the Underground Railroad was because the activities had to be kept secret in darkness and using disguises and the reason it has the railroad part is because railroad terms were used to explain the system and how it worked. A lot of the routes were lines that led to places called stations the people that helped the escaped slaves were called aids. The Underground Railroad had fourteen routes that ran through the northern states and Canada. The people who aide the runaway slaves were either freed slaves or Northern abolitionists. The effects of the Underground Railroad was that it led over four thousand African American families’ to freedom
