Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave in America who tried to sue for his freedom but was unsuccessful, in the famous court case Dred Scott v. Sandford of 1856. The court case was established on the grounds that Dred Scott and his wife were slaves, but lived in states/territories where slavery was abolished. The court ruled seven to two against Scott. Finding that neither he or any person that had African blood running through their veins could get citizenship in America and that therefore Scott could not bring suit in federal court under citizenship rules.
