Sectionalism
Sectionalism is extreme pride in what they (North and South) have possession over, rather it be land, weather, a crop, etc. Our nation was and still is divided by interests, attitudes, and overall a way of living. The North was driven by their stunning business industry with shipping, trading, and manufacturing of goods. Yet down South they were pushed by their fresh crops that were produced and ownership of the work done by the slaves. The South was extremely dependent on the work done by slaves and the North was very dependent on their trade routes and manufacturing.
Due to Lincoln winning the election this spurred eleven of the Southern states to secede away since Lincoln was against slavery. The North was upset and felt as if it was an all give and no receive, aka a one-sided compromise. A lot of the slaves in the South fought their owners because they were feeling attacked rather than actually having the urge to follow through with violence. The South was very defensive of what they have and own and the North had a higher population.
