Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
President Andrew Johnson became president when Abraham Lincoln was killed. After he was president for two years, Johnson wanted to get rid of Edwin Stanton who was Lincoln’s secretary of war with Lorenzo Thomas. Congress opposed this decision and moved to impeach Johnson. On February 24,1868 Congress impeached Johnson and shortly after his impeachment trial began. Those who wanted Johnson Impeached could not get a Two-Thirds majority to convict him, so Johnson avoided being removed from office.
